Hangin’ in Hangzhou

Posted by on September 27, 2009

I went to Hangzhou (pronounced Hahng-joe) the other afternoon with a fellow English teacher Lynn. She had a meeting that night so we had a few hours to walk around the city and I could check out the famous West Lake for the first time. I though I’d share some pics…

It was during the week so it was really empty.

We wandered down these little cobbled streets.

Check out the size of those water plants!

Even though everything looks quite old and ancient most of it was rebuilt within the past 20 years. That’s not to say it is just a new tourist attraction. Hangzhou has some truly ancient history. It was the capital of the Southern Song dynasty. Marco Polo is one of the most famous visitors to this city and he declared it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.  Hangzhou is also noted for it’s fresh fish cuisine, although I wouldn’t know anything about that as we ate a KFC. (I know, I know, but we were in a hurry and there were only expensive tourist restaurants around.)
