Sh#*@ing Leprechauns

Ever since we came to China we have had some good luck. From getting a nice apartment (with bamboo flooring installed) to getting a phone number with lots of 8’s in it. (Considered very lucky here. A few people asked how much extra we had to pay for it because it was such a good number.) But of course we’ve had bad luck too, like when our apartment was broken into and our camera stolen.
But in the scheme of things it is not that bad. Sure, it’s freaky to know that someone was actually in your house, going through your things, but our camera was a simple digital canon camera that was easily replaced a few days later for a couple hundred bucks.
But it seems like we still have quite a bit of good luck left in reserves. The other day we got a call from the international office saying that the thieves had been caught and our camera had been found. Four months later.
To be honest, we didn’t even believe them. The police take crimes against foreigners here very seriously (its like they don’t want any bad press or something) and our camera is one that is very common all over China. We figured they caught another criminal who happened to have the same camera on him, and decided to pass it off as ours to save face.
But after signing a few pages of paperwork we were handed our camera, in our camera case, complete with the extra battery and everything. Unfrigginbeliavable. The only thing that was missing was our 4gb card, but the 516mb one was still in it.
We guess that the camera was too old to be sold, but it wasn’t ignored. We noticed some wear and tear on the back, like they were pressing some buttons a lot. The thieves probably couldn’t sell it so they decided to use it. We were hoping for some funny criminal pictures left on the camera, but the card had been wiped. The camera still works perfectly.
The night the camera was returned to us we sat looking at it, still in disbelief. Then Ryan spoke up and said, “Sometimes it’s like we shit leprechauns.”

We are a month into the fall 2020 semester, so I thought I’d give a little update on what the teaching situation is like. Masks? Alternate day in-class attendance? Social distancing on campus and a mix of classroom and online learning? Well….no. None of that. If you were beamed to

I Won “Favorite Teacher!”

College has started and students have come back to school after being gone for 6 months, so I wasn’t surprised when a few students contacted me to ask if I was still on campus. But I was surprised when they said they wanted to see me and give me flowers.
