In Search of a Hamburger in China

I have been searching high and low for the past three months for a hamburger. Nothing special mind you, just a plain unsweetened bun with a ground beef patty in the middle. I’m even willing to skip the lettuce and tomato (thought it would be nice) and settle only for ketchup. Sound reasonable, right? After … Continue reading »

Ginkgo Nuts

The other night we had the honor of being invited to a birthday celebration of a 6-year-old boy. The party, or banquet I should really call it, was held at a very fancy, very traditional Chinese restaurant. The setting was amazing, a private room complete with scroll artwork on the wall, traditional style chairs and … Continue reading »

Without a doubt, the biggest question I get asked is, “What is the food like?” followed closely with, “Is it anything like Chinese food back home?” And here are my answers: Fantastic! Not at all. Of course there are similarities between western Chinese food and real Chinese food such as lots of rice, noodles and veggies but even the basics … Continue reading »

Tibetan Butter Tea

I have always been curious about Tibetan butter tea. I knew that many people said it was hard to drink and an acquired taste, but it’s just a sort of milk tea, right? How bad could that be? While in Yunnan Province I had my chance. Yunnan borders Tibet and there are many Tibetan people living there. … Continue reading »

Hope Your Not Hungry…..

I just thought I’d share one of our favorite meals here in Lin’an. Fried dumplings. Ryan likes the dumplings boiled in soup, I like them fried. Either way, they are delicious: And yes, drooling on your keyboard is, in this case, acceptable.
